We have all heard the old saying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but that statement is often ignored. In actuality, breakfast being important has much truth to it. When waking up in the morning, our bodies are in starvation mode since we have not eaten since the day before at dinner time. That is the longest time our bodies go without food, thus breakfast has a different effect than any other meal does on your body. If you consume breakfast within two hours of waking up, the way your body metabolizes glucose changes for the whole day. By skipping breakfast the body experiences prolonged fasting, which will lead to a bigger than normal boost in ghrelin, which is a hunger hormone. Increased hunger hormones encourage you to overeat at your next meal. Overall, people who eat breakfast in the morning have a better diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains versus those who skip this meal.
